Angry Muslims have attacked four churches since Malaysia's High Court decided to allow Christians to use the Malay name for God.  Three were firebombed, and in one church building, the incendiary device failed to go off. The intent is clear.

We spoke with an MNN listener living in Malaysia, working in ministry. For security purposes, we'll call him 'David.' He lives in the same metropolitan area as the churches that were attacked. David says what happened is alarming. "This is totally shocking to us Malaysians, because as far as this generation can remember, this has never happened. We've always had peaceful relations." 

Muslims contend the name "Allah" should be exclusive to Islam. David counters that. He says "Allah" is used to translate "Elohim," and "Tuhan" is used to translate "Adonai" -but it is also applied to Jesus Christ in the New Testament. The end result: both of the terms are used often to describe the character of God in the Malay Bible.

David says in the 1980s, the government made it illegal for non-Muslims to use "Allah." Churches quietly protested, and the government agreed not to enforce the ban but left it on the books.

Pray for God to awaken the people of India to the dangers of militant Hinduism and pray that anti-Christian propaganda will be rejected in preference for truth, openness, harmony and liberty. Pray for the Indian Church to grow in prayerfulness, casteless solidarity, wisdom, grace and perseverance in the face of suffering.

Pray for the people of Nepal to be united across ethnic and religious lines, and that they will find so much joy in liberty that they will not be tempted by Hindu nationalism. Ask God to give great heavenly wisdom and courage to evangelists in Nepal and to bless their witness.

Pray for God to continue moving powerfully amongst the people in Islamic countries so that just and upright political leaders might be raised up and prepared to serve the nation.

Pray for God to bless converts to Christianity in nations such as Iran and Saudi Arabia. Ask God to enable them to be instruments of blessing (salt), transformation (yeast), and truth (light) in their communities (Matthew 5:13-16).

Pray for nations where Al-Qaeda terrorism is intense, such as Iraq and Algeria, and for where Muslim militants instigate violence against Christians, such as Nigeria, Egypt and Somalia.  Pray for protection, wisdom, provision and perseverance for the victims of attacks and for those who have lost loved ones due to violent persecution.

The church in China continues to endure harsh persecution in many areas, even as progress sweeps across the fields of industry, education, and technology in China. Still the church grows.  

Iran is another huge nation where persecution by Muslim clerics has created a huge shift away from radical Islam among the populous, with tens of thousands becoming Christians in the past decade.  Perhaps more Christians have been martyred in Iran than another other country in this century. Yet the church grows, both in Iran and among refugees in other nations.  Learn more about the international day of prayer at Open Doors, Voice of the Martyrs or the IDOP page of the World Evangelical Fellowship.

And take some time today to pray for Christians being persecuted across the Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist and Communist world today.
